The Coddling of the American Mind is a book that explores the idea that we, as a society, are destroying that chances of our children to have healthy, productive lives through our obsession with “safety”.  Written by two liberals, Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Haidt, it does an excellent job of taking a look at a number of examples of how over parenting or what is also known as “helicopter parenting” is actually damaging children and society in the long run.  Including an interesting idea of why peanut allergies are rising in kids throughout the country.  That was certainly something that I was unaware of.  But I thought it was a great example of what this book is all about.

They also take a look at the negative side effects that social media is having on today’s youth, and most especially young women.  Which, I wasn’t really familiar with until I read this.  I found this book to be well written, easy to read, and well sourced.  And I believe it is one of the most important books written in the modern era.  If you have ever heard the expression “The road to hell is paved with good intentions”; well that is basically this book in a nutshell.
